Synopsis of the Old Testament

The Old Testament, also known as the Hebrew Bible, is the foundation of both Jewish and Christian faiths. It tells the story of God’s creation, His covenant with His people, and His plan for redemption through Israel. It is divided into several key sections:

1. The Pentateuch (Torah) – Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy

  • Focus: The creation of the world, the fall of humanity, the patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob), the Exodus from Egypt, and the giving of the Law to Moses.

  • Theme: God's covenant relationship with His people.

2. Historical Books – Joshua through Esther

  • Focus: The history of Israel from entering the Promised Land, the era of judges and kings, division of the kingdom, exile, and return.

  • Theme: Obedience brings blessing; disobedience brings consequences.

3. Wisdom & Poetry Books – Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon

  • Focus: Worship, wisdom for life, suffering, love, and human emotion in relationship with God.

  • Theme: Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

4. Major Prophets – Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel

  • Focus: Calling people back to God, warning of judgment, and messages of hope and restoration.

  • Theme: God is holy, just, and merciful.

5. Minor Prophets – Hosea through Malachi

  • Focus: Shorter prophetic messages addressing sin, justice, and hope for the future.

  • Theme: God desires repentance and offers redemption.

Here are some tools and strategies to help deepen your understanding:

1. Study Bible

  • Use a good study Bible like the ESV Study Bible, Life Application Study Bible, or CSB Study Bible.

  • These include notes, maps, timelines, and explanations of verses.

2. Bible Dictionary or Concordance

  • Tools like Strong’s Concordance or Holman Bible Dictionary help you understand key terms and where they appear in Scripture.

3. Bible Reading Plans

  • Try a chronological plan or a thematic one (e.g., “Old Testament in 90 Days”).

  • Use apps like YouVersion or Bible Gateway.
